So here’s a random thought that I know will bless you. I was sharing this with my brother the other day.
Sing with understanding
Sometimes we sing songs but don’t realise the amazing, enriching and immense meaning of what we’re singing into. We only seem to let the heart resonate and echo the surface or the literal and or even the natural understanding of the lyrics. But, if a sonnet, a poem, a picture or a refrain beckons you into a journey of discovery – I encourage us to take a step closer.
Immersed in more
Fill Me Up was a song written and released by Will Reagan of United Pursuit Band around 2008. Thank you @willreaganmusic and @unitedpursuit! A few years later, this was covered by Jesus Culture’s Kim Walker and more recently by Tasha Cobbs who added a coda to it.
An intimate cry of the heart, in total abandon, asking for the more of God. For more of His love to overflow in and through us. For more of the fire of God and His Spirit to engulf our lives.
I felt that this was a ‘stripped down to simple’ song – going after the heart of God. For me it was revolutionary songwriting. A four word chorus – that said it all.
On the surface of the lyrics, it is clear to all singing that we’re asking to be filled with the Spirit of God.
So my thought was ‘Lord, what can I be filled with?’
Let us be invigorated to know that we need not run on empty, or scrape the bottom of our deep or feel guilty for asking for the more of God even in our levels of low or high. He will never reject us.
Increasing our capacity
I was amazed to find that the next time I sing this song of hunger, there’s so much to be filled with in agreement with God’s Word. Here is a list of just a few holy desires we should press in and align ourselves for.
- Knowledge of God’s will – Col 1:9
- Fruit of Righteousness – Phil 1:11
- Fullness of God – Eph 3:19
- Jesus Christ Himself – Eph 1:22-23
- Holy Spirit – Acts 7:55 & Eph 5:18
- Joy and Peace – Rom 15:13
- Love – Eph 5:2
- Praise and God’s glory – Psalm 71:8
- Laughter and Singing – Psalm 126:2
- Plenty and New Wine – Prov 3:10
As God’s beloved, let us take a desperate step to ridding ourselves of the wrong things that puff us up and instead be filled with all that God so wants us to overflow in. Not just for us, but for the sake of the world around us.
Can you think of what else we could be filled with according to God’s Word?
To the overflow
I would like to leave you with two verses about the unlimited glory of God.
For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit. John 3:34
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Psalm 23:5
